| Ampeli |
RESTAURANT PROFILE
Serving both Greek and Italian dishes, owners Antonio Nina and Paul Vouzas hope the variety of their all-encompassing Medditteranean menu will lure in hungry prospects.
Ampeli's menu is diverse, serving everything from souvlaki to thin crust pizza.
Cleverly scattered tables lend a cozy feel to this deceptively cavernous space. The menu is extensive, if predictable?pizza and pasta are listed, but when in Greektown, stick to the Med standards. Huge portions demand prudence with complimentary warm sourdough bread and extra-virgin olive oil if you want to face your main with appetite. Calamari is a safe start; the char-grilled version fares better than the more popular deep-fried rendition. Marinated grilled quail is pleasantly tarted up with lemon and balsamic. Ampeli?s snapper, possibly the biggest fish this side of the Don Valley, is adequately grilled and accented with lemon and herb oil. It?s accompanied by lemon roasted potatoes and veggies, cauliflower, baby carrots abd zucchini. Go all the way and finish with baklava. Greek wines offered by the glass.
Ampeli offers a relaxing atmosphere to sit back, drink ouzo and nibble at mezedes or stay for a hearty and delicious home-style meal.

RESTAURANT PROFILE
Candles cast romantic shadows on soft grey walls, the intimate space expanded by judiciously hung mirrors and chef Pedro Quintanilla's open kitchen at the rear. The scale is small (a wine list of only two dozen eclectically chosen labels seems perversely frugal), but pride and passion are obvious wherever food is concerned. Fresh lavender is an exotic presence as the garnish for a salad of radicchio and avocado, the backup for gorgeous, warm sea scallops. Soft peppercorns and sage perfume a coarse terrine of rabbit and pancetta, the meaty slab posed over a salad of apple, walnut and eel in a Germanic mustard mayonnaise. Twinning meat and seafood works equally well with a main course of super veal tenderloin, the sweet flesh capped with a giant ravioli filled with crabmeat and chèvre; a chili-touched ragout of different beans earths the flavours beautifully. Grapefruit curd is one sauce for a passion fruit mousse with the texture of clotted cream folded into a chocolate tuile beside tangy passion fruit jelly; chocolate coulis is another. Closed Sunday and Monday.

| Lobby |

RESTAURANT PROFILE
Lobby is the latest of showplaces to sip on a signature martini, it's as NYC as Toronto gets. Predictable are the throngs of see-and-be-scenesters vying for flirtatious attention. What is, however, unexpected is the drop-dead design of a space formerly occupied by, believe it or not, a Wrap 'n' Roll. In a not-so-subtle reference to its hotelish 'hood (there are three within mere seconds of each other), the Lobby name continues the trend of today's exclusive star-magnet boutique inns with lobbies that spill seamlessly into restaurants, and in this case onto the street where you first notice the over-the-top opulence. What does come as a surprise, however, is the fact that Lobby's beauty is more than just skin deep as evidenced by a very well-trained staff and superior food.

| Monte Cristo Restaurant & Piano Bar |
RESTAURANT PROFILE
With almost a decade of experience running the successful midtown La Vecchia, the Philopes brothers' recently opened Monte Cristo already counts as a stylish grotto for upscale downtown dining. Taking their cues from a winery in Salerno, Italy, they've literally created a room that's the epitome of the calm after the storm. Vaulted ceilings and a dozen rectangular stone columns add the kind of serenity one might expect from a 15th century monastery. Even the bar stars. What marvels about this room is its traditional classic charm that still manages to pass today's trendy test. So does chef Winnie Tsang whose jet-set culinary art makes detours in France and Asia before coming back home to Italy.

| Nectar Restaurant |

RESTAURANT PROFILE
There is lots to marvel at, at Nectar -- from the dimly lit understated elegance of a room created by Jutras and designer Irfan Bukhari to attentive and relaxed servers who lend to the room's calm atmosphere, a serenity even present with the din from diners. Walls of exposed brick and ultrasuede paneling, dark woods and illuminated alabaster really stick out with eye-popping appeal. As well it should. Nectar dares to sit on a desolate industrial stretch of Wellington West, removed from the glamorama of King West's eatertainment district. But even more remarkable is being served such fine food at prices 30 per cent less than the competition.

RESTAURANT PROFILE
An authentic Portuguese restaurant featuring fresh fish, traditional grilled meat dishes and seafood. The finest cuisine of the Iberian coast can be found through these doors, along with a wine list of more than 150 Portuguese wines. The restaurants also has one of Toronto's largest selection of ports and madeira along with many desserts and cheese and nut platters.
The room conforms to the College Street template: long, narrow and outfitted to beguile. In this case, that means cushioned banquettes, white tablecloths, well-stocked wooden wine racks and a tiny wooden bar up front. Almost as lengthy as main courses, the appetizer list favours seafood. Seven springy pan-seared shrimp repose in garlic, white wine sauce boasting chili heat, accompanied by creamy cheese spiked with piri piri. Soups include Portugal's national potage, caldo verde. There's also a nightly offering, say a thick mushroom purée curiously lacking funghi flavour and garnished with an ill-advised sprinkling of oregano. Mains are more democratic than starters and draw from the land as much as the sea. Pan-seared B.C. black cod could not be more juicy and sweet; the fish gets strong support from shiitake mushrooms and truffled mash. Things go awry with grilled marinated half rabbit. Smeared with a sludgy portpink peppercorn juice, it proves to be dry and tough garnishing the boring bunny is a too-salty hash of kidney beans, chorizo and cornbread. Sweets run to tried-and-true Portuguese confections, including a trifling trifle built on sponge cake, whipped cream, custard, fruit and not enough sherry and cognac. Good selection of port and madeira, including many by the glass.

| Ultra Supper Club |
RESTAURANT/CLUB PROFILE
Ultra Supper Club strikes the perfect posh/playground balance, seamlessly mixing delicious design and delectable food with loungy relaxation. Not to mention, adding a touch of a class and elegance to a street that long ago lost its cachet for finer food haunts in favour of fashion retailers.
When the doors to Ultra opened, Toronto found out what transformations had been wrought, and anyone with eyes could see that an elegant jewel had just been added to Toronto nightlife's crown. Columns rise two floors tall - in open spaces due to some brilliant design work. These aren't mosquito nets but 'privacy' curtains enclosing 'pods', whose folds create the illusion of grooves like those on the columns of a Roman temple.
Design associates divided the space into two areas, a lounge and a dining room, both of which eventually meet when Ultra's dining room transforms into a dance area. The full-height drapery pods straddle the centre of the space while informal dining tables are adjacently arranged to accommodate up to 100 diners. Six booths with pin stripe fabric banquettes sit on a raised stage-like platform that overlooks the whole dining area.
The brick walls and iron and glass chandeliers give the club a vaguely industrial feeling, but those sheer curtains, along with the low-slung couches, soften things nicely.
